On August 7th, 2023, I took 600 mg of diphenhydramine (popularly known as Benadryl) over the course of a few hours. As my dosage increased, the side effects of the drug increased as well, from a restless pins and needles feeling to severe tremors, loss of balance and coordination, negation of short-term memory, and visual and auditory hallucinations that left me on the edge of delirium at the gates of hell itself. At high doses, DPH creates darkness out of light and reduces the user to a shaking, paranoid shell of themselves. 700 mg induces pure delirium and higher doses increase the risk of seizures and death. This is an auditory interpretation of the trip, created with the help of my noise-loving alter-ego Hemorrhagic Aqua Vitae and is by turns propulsive, menacing, calm, and nihilistic. It is also a warning.
